Hopi Potter: Agnes Stella Nahsonhoya is a member of the Bear Clan from Sichomovi Village at Second Mesa and was born in Keams Canyon, Arizona. She's been making pottery for the past twenty years. Agnes learned to make pottery from her mother (Pauline Setella, who learned from her aunt, Eunice Fawn Navasie, Joy Navasie, (Frog Woman), whose mark is the "frog". She learned from her grandmother, Agnes Navasie, how to use the trditional way from start to finish. Agnes is recognized as one of the most outstanding contemporary Hopi potter of today. She takes her work very seriously and her work reflects near perfection. Agnes has won award at various show including first placer at the "Hopi Show" given by the Museum of Northern Arizona in 1992, the pot being a rare piece. Her style of pottery has changed through the years, starting with the white slip on natural clay, then moving towards the more traditional style of using no slip at all. Different colors come from clays, mustard week for black paint which is boiled until it's like taffy, and various stones for the red and white. The clay she primarily uses is a light peach or red color after firing. Her painting utensils are a matchstick end used for a dotted effect in her designs, and a yucca brush like her ancestors before her. "To show proper respect for the clay, she wishes to continue doing it the old way, that means digging the clay, hand coling, hand-burnishing, and outdoor firing. From the hands of her mother, to the dampness of the clay, to the smell of the smoke when the pots are fired, she is always connected to the clay. Her trademark is the "Bear Claw".
